Ecuador striker Gonzalo Plata (center, no bib) is mobbed by teammates after his 77th minute go-ahead goal.

Editor’s Note: I’ll be shifting my format for Matchday 3, as I attempt to keep up with the insane cadence of three doubleheaders of fixtures per day. I hope you enjoy my minute-by-minute commentary—taken directly from my notes as I watch! Make sure you’re tuning in to all the highlights on my Instagram & Bluesky. I’ll return to my usual format upon the start of the Round of 32! <3, E$

0’ Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann opts, for some reason, to keep both Leroy Sane and Kai Havertz in his starting lineup—despite the Matchday 3 fixture having no implications for his side. They’ve looked rather poor at the 2026 World Cup so far, with substitute Dennis Undav providing the majority of Die Mannschaft’s attacking success off the bench. There have been a plethora of memes discussing Nagelsmann’s apparent reluctance to start Undav and they will continue on following today’s match—especially if he nets another goal. The rest of the lineup is fairly similar with the exception of Rüdiger slotting in for the injured Schlotterbeck and Nathaniel Brown oddly swapped out for David Raum at left back. Ecuador will hope to find their first goal of the tournament after they were held to another goose egg by Curacao’s Eloy Room (15 saves). They’ll face German national team legend Manuel Neuer this time out, needing a win to keep their hopes alive. Can Enner Valencia finally return to the World Cup scoresheet?

2’ GERMANY SCOREEEEEEEEEE & ECUADOR ARE LIVID AT THE REF!!!!! The fullback Raum takes a throw-in down the left side of the attacking third, sending it towards Pavlovic who is waiting inside the edge of the 18-yard box. The midfielder opts to kick it out of the air, but his boot makes visible contact with Ecuador’s Vite—the victim falling to the floor. The referee doesn’t seem to care, allowing play to carry on as the German pokes it to Wirtz, who sets up Sane perfectly at the top of the area. He hits it first time with his left foot, slotting the ball in the net. Ecuadorians fervently protest the move—but it’s upheld.

9’ ECUADOR EQUALIZE WITH A CRACKER OF A STRIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BANG!!!!!! German midfielder Nmecha is dispossessed by a sneaky Pedro Vite, passing the ball over to left midfielder Nilson Angulo as the South American side looks to take advantage of the break. Angulo, nearing the edge of the 18-yard box, shifts the Trionda onto his right foot before unleashing a hammer past a diving Neuer into the bottom-right corner of the goal. WHAT A HIT!

20’ Ecuador have begun to slow things down in this match, as they move the ball around the Germany half in a patient display of possession. Things are looking very promising for the South Americans, suddenly the match pendulum swinging back their way.

23’ Ecuadorian fullback Alan Franco tracks upfield, swinging a brilliant cross towards the 6-yard box from the right wing. The German defenders in the middle head the ball out swiftly, shutting down the chance.

24’ Encapie is played into the far side of the German area, darting in from his position on the left flank. Sane tracks back to sniff out the run, an admirable job from the goalscorer.

25’ Moises Caideco is dispossessed in the attacking third, sending Raum on a run down the left wing with the ball. His cross is a good one, Havertz rising to head the Trionda at goal—but the Arsenal man sends it right into the grasp of Ecuador keeper Galindez.

34’ The majority Ecuadorian crowd rises to their feet as veteran striker Enner Valencia tracks into the attacking third, but Germany does well to close down the move.

35’ Havertz plays in Musiala, a lovely rolled ball setting him up inside the 18-yard box. Ecuadorian defender Ordonez slides in to block it right as it leaves the German’s boot, the ensuing corner snuffed out.

40’ Ecuador are throwing bodies everywhere they can when Germany moves into their half, deflecting passes, blocking crosses, stepping into challenges. They’re doing a good job at limiting build-up play from Die Mannschaft, the Germans unable to create many chances after Sane’s early goal.

41’ Raum plays a lovely ball down the left wing to Musiala, who treks into the Ecuadorian box. He sends a driven Trivela pass towards Havertz in the middle, but Caicedo does a good job of tracking him down to boot it away.

45+1’ Ecuador have failed to put a shot on goal since Angulo’s 9th minute opener, Germany additionally outpossessing them 61 - 39%. They continue to apply pressure when their opponents hold the ball in their own half, hoping they can dispossess the Germans and spring the counter.

HALFTIME

46’ HORROR FOR ECUADOR AS THEY GIVE AWAY A PENALTY WITHIN 60 SECONDS!!!! BUT WAIT A SECOND!!!!!!!! Havertz goes down inside of the box after Ecuador’s Ordonez tackles him from behind. It’s disaster for Ecuador, who desperately plead with referee Tori Penso. Eventually, the American ref heads to the VAR booth after she catches wind of a possible infraction preceding the call. Eventually, the penalty is rescinded, a silly foul in the buildup by Germany’s Sane ruining a surefire chance for a two-goal cushion. Ecuador coach Sebastián Beccacece celebrates the decision, waving his hands to hype up the sea of yellow around the stadium.

54’ Yeboah muscles off Raum on the right wing, able to track his way into the box. He dazzles the full back with another stepover, forcing a deflection out behind for a corner. The delivery finds Valencia at the back post, but his header heads wide of the goal, a poor connection.

58’ Deniz Undav is spotted on the touchline by the commentators, Nagelsmann surely looking to bring on the super-sub to try and break the deadlock. Can he extend his streak of matches with a goal to three?

60’ Undav enters the game, replacing Havertz up top.

62’ ALMOST ANOTHER ECUADOR BANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeboah chases a longball heading out of play, catching it just in the knick of time. He fizzed a cross over to Valencia on the outside of the area who sends a wonderful volleyed effort towards goal, forcing a diving Neuer to come to the rescue.

64’ Wirtz threatens the Ecuadorian backline with a nice run, attempting to shoot on goal. His effort is blocked by the center back Pacho, the ball bouncing around and conveniently making its way into the path of a trailing Raum on the left. He’s unable to find the final ball, however, his cross snuffed out.

72’ CHANCE FOR ECUADOR!!!!! SOOOOO CLOSE!!!! Angulo attempts to play Plata in behind the defense, but he puts a bit too much mustard on the pass. Neuer rushes out to collect, looking quite easy for him, but the center back Tah kicks it out of his grasp before he can do so—an embarrrassing miscommunication! Ecuador substitute Rodriguez keeps the ball in play before it crosses the byline, finding Caicedo. The skipper tees up Plata for a shot but it misses the target. What’s going on with Germany?

75’ The South American faithful around the stadium begin to loudly chant “ECUADOR, ECUADOR” trying to will their team forward in the attacking third as they maintain possession. Plata gives away a silly foul, ending the move.

76’ OH NO LEROY SANE!!!!! The Galatasaray man is played through on goal but he completely fluffs the shot, hitting the top half of the Trionda as it feebly bounces straight into the arms of keeper Galindez.

78’ ECUADOR GOALLLLLLLLLLL!!!! PANDEMONIUM IN EAST RUTHERFORD!!!! THE COACH HAS LEPT INTO THE STANDS TO CELEBRATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE LEAD IS THEIRS!!!!! Caicedo provides a wonderful corner kick delivery to the near post, the substitute Rodriguez flicking it on at the near post. Plata pokes it home as Neuer looks a bit out of his depth trying to make the save. The heavily pro-Ecuadorian crowd goes bananas, their side having taken its first lead of the entire tournament—Beccacece climbing into the stands to hug his (presumed) partner, admirably.

79’ The Ecuadorians in attendance have absolutely come alive after the go-ahead goal from Plata. It’ll be tough for Die Mannschaft to recapture any momentum in this atmosphere.

83’ Plata steals the ball near the center circle and the Ecuadorian faithful roar him on as he turns upfield. Germany soon break down the attack, but the momentum remains visibly behind the South American’s sails.

88’ Raum takes a freekick deep in the German right wing, sending an inswinger towards the near post. Estpunian does a good job of heading the ball out for a corner, Ecuador clearing the ensuing set piece with ease.

89’ A poor late tackle by Plata on Musiala along the far sideline results in another booking for the South Americans, their third of the day. Luckily, they’ll be wiped from their record assuming they can hold on for the win.

90+2’ Neuer and the German backline are spotted pushing up into the opposition’s half, hoping to find an equalizer to save face—despite the result of this match not affecting them, their top spot in the group already secured.

90+3’ UNDAV NEARLY NETS ANOTHER LAST-MINUTE GOAL!!!!!!!! The German super-sub is unable to convert an incredibly tight-angled shot after receiving the ball inside of the Ecuadorian 18-yard box. His effort splashes into the side netting, out of play for a goal kick. Unlucky.

90+4’ Ecuador seem a bit shaky as Germany continue to hold possession in the attacking third, hoping to stun the South Americans with a late goal. There’s just three minutes left for the Ecuadorians to hold on and see themselves through to the knockout stage, currently in first place out of all the third place nations thanks to their goal differential.

90+6’ Caicedo plays a lovely ball in midfield over to Plata on the left, the striker darting past his man down the wing. He draws a free kick on the corner of the German’s 18-yard box, surely buying enough time for them to run out the clock.

90+7’ ECUADOR HAVE DONE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY TOPPLE THE GERMANS AND SNEAK THEIR WAY INTO THE ROUND OF 32!!!!!!!!!!! THE COACH JUMPS INTO THE STANDS TO CELEBRATE ONCE MORE!!!!!

Squad Outlook

Ecuador delivered the performance of their lives against a formidable opponent in Germany, coming back from a 1-0 deficit to snatch all three points. Wowie. It was truly the midfield that carried them through in this fixture, Yeboah, Caicedo, Vite, and goalscorer Angulo all putting in impressive shifts. Let us not forget about substitute Kevin Rodriguez, coming in to replace Enner Valencia off the bench and assisting the eventual game winner. Ecuador are my darkhorse pick going forward, f*ck it, I’m declaring it now. They might have to travel to Azteca to face Mexico in the Round of 32—I’m absolutely elated if that comes to fruition. We shall see. Shoutout to the coach Beccacece for displaying an incredible amount of emotion throughout the comeback win today, you love to see it.

Germany were quite honestly lucky to have scored in this fixture. Sane’s opener had no business being upheld with the Pavlovic high boot being swiftly ignored by the referee. Havertz did nothing in the #9 role again, surprise, surprise. I was impressed by David Raum on the left today, he made a convincing argument to get the nod over Nathaniel Brown going forward—albeit I still prefer the latter. Who knows what the absolute hell is going through coach Julian Nagelsmann’s mind. He still refuses to start the only clinical finisher on the entire roster in Deniz Undav. Undav, as we saw today, can’t do everything on his own. Sure, Florian Wirtz was servicable. Manuel Neuer’s age has began to show. Germany are on upset watch despite advancing to the Round of 32 atop the group. Beware!

Man of the Match

Pedro Vite gets the nod for an excellent shift logged in the middle of the park. He was clinical in his tackles, intercepted a few balls, and of course notched an early assist to Angulo. The central midfield pairing of Vite and Caicedo will be a formidable test for the South American side’s Round of 32 opponent.

Moment of the Match

Most definitely the eruption that followed Plata’s winnerEcuador coach Sebastian Beccacece jumping into the stands to hug his girlfriend/wife was incredible to watch, peak theater.
